I used 2 strands of Debbie Bliss DK Cashmerino yarn together for this.
Hook: 5.5mm. (US crochet terminology)
To start:
Chain 2
Round 1: Chain 3 (this counts as 1st dc). Make 11 dcs in 2nd chain from hook (to finish with 12 stitches).
Round 2: do 2 dcs in every stitch (24 stitches).
Round 3: do 2 dcs in every stitch (48 stitches). (These are drastic increases to encourage the ‘gathered’ effect.)
Round 4: Increase 1 stitch in every other stitch. (e.g. 2 dcs in 1st stitch; 1 dc in 2nd; 2dcs in 3rd; 1 in 4th and so on) (72).
Rounds 5-14: do 1 dc in every stitch (72). Keep checking against your head size and stop if you think it’s getting too long, or carry on more rounds if you prefer the hat to be longer!
Round 15: Decrease after every 6th stitch (i.e. do 7th & 8th stitches together) (64).
Round 16: Decrease after every 5 stitches (i.e. do 6th & 7th stitches tog) (56).
Round 17: 1 dc in every stitch (56).
Round 18: Use Single Crochet. Decrease after every 10th stitch (11th & 12th tog) (52).
Round 19: SC 52 stitches all round. Join & cut. Weave in ends.
Note: If you find that the hat is too loose or tight you can do more decreases, or leave some out as you go along, to fit against your head. I worked it through by trial and error, by fitting it on my own head as I went along. The resulting hat fits me almost perfectly, though I could’ve done with another decrease or two in places, as it is still a tiny bit loose on me. (But that’s OK, it means it puts less kinks in my hair! LOL

Hey there, so I finally did the slouch beanie from your pattern 🙂 Can you tell me what your gauge was like on yours, as mine has come out pretty huge and floppy and I’d like to try to fix it or redo it! (I didn’t want to adjust it as I went along in case I messed it up). Thank you so much!
Oh, and you asked me before if I have a blog/page, and no I don’t…yet – your suggestion got me thinking about it though…
I had the same problem with it being bigger than it should be. I realized that I was adding an extra dc at the end of each row, I ended up starting over and actually counting 72 dc’s for each row. I got a little too ambitious and forgot to count. Hope this helps you out. 🙂
HI! I’ve never worked with guage so i’m not too sure. It was a spur of the moment thing and I measured it against my own head as I went along – I must have a larger head than yours(!) but I’ve just measured my head and it’s 22″ around (don’t know if that’s normal or not?!)
Also don’t forget I used 2 strands together & a 5.5 hook so it would be a bit large. Perhaps if you tried using a thinner yarn and smaller hook it may come out smaller?
Can you post/send a pic of your hat? I’m very curious to see how it came out.
Sizing aside, were the instructions easy to follow or confusing in parts?
I was wondering, did you join rounds or did you work in a spiral? Great pattern, btw 🙂

Just finished simple slouch beanie. Used Villawool 8 ply and #5.5mm crocket hook. Beanie came out quite a bit smaller, obviously your Bliss DK is a much thicker ply, but not to be wasted will fit one of the grandies.
I am still new to crochet. When you say you used two strands….. Does that mean together….at the same time? so instead of having the one string on your hook you will have two? Thanks for the help I am really interested in making this for myself and sister.
Hello Stephanie, yes I used two strands at the same time, using two ball of wool, for a chunkier effect. But I think it would work as well with perhaps one strand of a thicker yarn, like Aran. Hope it works out well! 🙂
Hiii. So I just want to say that I love this slouchy beanie pattern. I’ve been on a mad search to find a pattern that’s simple yet super cute. And this pattern is so easy and I just love it. I used a different type of yarn than you, but I did use two strands so it would come out thicker and I’m so glad that I did. Basically what I’m trying to say is thank you for this beanie pattern. It’s awesome! 🙂
I just made this hat. It was a fairly easy pattern to follow, but I do have two comments/questions regarding it;
When you start the pattern you write: Chain 2. Not sure I understood this part. When I start a hat pattern, I start by chaining 4, joining which forms the first round. Then I chain 3 (which counts as the 1st dc) and then make 11 dcs in the center of the ring, which totals 12 and then you join to the top of the first chain 3. Perhaps you start your hats differently. I didn’t try to follow your chain 2….Round 1: Chain 3 (this counts as 1st dc). Make 11 dcs in 2nd chain from hook (to finish with 12 stitches).
Because it was unfamiliar to me and couldn’t quite understand the directions. I thought you meant to make a round and then start the dcs in the 2nd chain from the hook, but you never mentioned making a round initially.
Also….
Round 2: would start with a chain 3 and them 2 dcs in every stitch…. (this was my second comment….you don’t mention joining each round or chaining 3 before starting the next round…that might be confusing to someone who never crocheted before because they wouldn’t understand how to finish the row and how to start the next correctly.
Otherwise this was one of the more clear patterns I have read. My finished had came out too long, but I like the pattern…specifically the top part…it’s very nice. I will make the is hat again tomorrow and reduce it to 16 rows rather than 19…I will do my reducing in the 5-14 section. I would be happy to take pictures of both hats tomorrow…while wearing them and share them with you.
